I have been quiet for the past ten days, and actively listening.

I have found that it is more important to listen and learn rather than to talk and assume. For weeks, voices from the Black community and people of color have risen in hopes to be heard and understood. I have been attending protests, talking with people of all backgrounds, and listening.

I would like to extend the invitation to you to listen as well.

This Friday, June 19th at 6:19PM in front of the County Administration Building (County-City Building) at 930 Tacoma Avenue South in Tacoma, there will be a demonstration and a call to action by a collection of young Black activists who have developed a plan to move our county forward.

The event is hosted by LegallyBLACK (Brave, Lifted, Altruistic, Creative, and Keen), a new organization created by several of the young leaders emerging from the protests and marches in our community.

This new organization is putting out a call to all citizens in Pierce County to open their ears and their hearts. Their goal, and ours, must be to achieve a true break with history and an acknowledgement that our system has not worked, and does not work, for everyone.

I hope to see you there.
